Relaxing On The Greek Islands

For many of us, the time has come to plan for the summer get away and one of the favourite holiday hot spots is Greece, a country renowned for the beautiful weather, stunning scenery and plenty of time to relax and unwind from the day to day toils of everyday life.

If you are heading off to Greece this year, you might be surprised to know that there are some fabulous wines available, produced in Greece and we have shared two of our favourites below.

Assyrtiko Vassaltis Santorini is a great wine produced on the volcanic soils of the beautiful island of Santorini.  Hand-picked, aged on lees for 6 months with flavours of white peach, lime and lemon this wine has a stony character and gentle spice on the classic nose. Really minerally on the palate, it`s tight and fresh yet really expressive. Grapefruit leading to riper citrus and hints of tropical fruit on the palate, good limey acidity and a really minerally finish. Clean, full-flavoured and expressive and a great wine from a beautiful island.

La Tour Melas Cyrus One is a wine that shows a real level of ripeness and intensity, combined with elegance, structure and capacity for ageing, rarely seen outside Pomerol and Bolgheri.   This wine can already be found on the wine lists of many of London`s finest Greek restaurants yet has still to be tasted by any of the major international wine critics - which is why you can still pick the wines up for a (relative) song: Dark crimson. The Cabernet Franc is definitely showing its presence in fragrant dark red fruit and a note of graphite, spice too. There’s sweet oak and a touch of vanilla too and well worth a try!

As our Carol says, "Anyone looking to relax in Greece this summer might like to do so with a glass of the local wine and I have to say, nothing beats a chilled glass of Assyrtiko Vassaltis Santorini as you are watching the sun set after another great day relaxing on the beach!"
