Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Nascetta and a tiny amount of Riesling. Luigi Baudana planted the white grapes in the coolest of his Cerretta blocks in Serralunga d`Alba within the Barolo zone. His original plan was to find out which variety would behave better.
Yet another brilliant SA Chardonnay, the grapes come exclusively from OVERBERG – The Cape`s coolest viticultural area with a unique climate. No overt wood characters on the nose. Subtle citrus fruit and citrus blossom fragrances are apparent on the nose, with hints of vanilla pod and almond flakes.
This Viognier is rich yet fresh with white peach and floral characters. Elegant but intense on the finish, this wine delights the palate with fresh fruit and complementary minerality.
This organic Pecorino, which is not to be confused with the cheese, takes its name from the Italian word ‘pecora’ meaning sheep. This is due to the fact that local sheep in the region would often eat the grapes whilst walking through the vineyards. This wine is bright gold in colour with an aromatic nose.
The Lady symbolises the expressive characters captured by different varieties – the fragrance and richness of Viognier, the finesse of Hárslevelü, the freshness of Sauvignon Blanc, and the enticing texture that Semillon offers. A blend of Viognier 52%, Semillon 21%, Hárslevelü 16% and Sauvignon Blanc 11%.
Rich gold in colour, this wine delights with mellow aromatics, which are reminiscent of pear, apple, quince, dough and cream, with a touch of wood smoke. On the palate, generous flavours of baked apple, quince, cream, nuts and pastry.
Le Chemin des Garennes from Chateau Capion is a blend of Roussanne and Bourboulenc from the Languedoc. A pale golden yellow in colour, the wine displays aromas of mandarin, white peach and lemon zest with notes of fennel, white flowers and wet stone. Barrel ageing lends the wine weight on the palate which is balanced by a refreshing acidity.
Calitzdorp is not the logical place to go hunting for Riesling, but here is another potential ‘hit’ that came out of Rick’s world tour of the Cape in March 2020, just prior to lockdown. The still-fermenting juice was presented to Rick by Margaux Nel of Boplaas, from grapes she and her partner, Leon had sourced from an apple farmer in Elgin.
A superb Malvasia Puntinata from Rome. The vineyards are located in the classic area of Castelli Romani, between the ancient volcanic area of southern Lazio and the city of Rome. The vineyards are located in the high quality production area of Roma DOC. This wine is bright straw-yellow in colour.
Bright yellow in colour, the ‘Generations‘ Riesling is aromatic on the nose with notes of peach, honey and ripe apple. The palate is round and fairly full in body with excellent intensity of stone fruit and mineral character.
Made at the Volpi family estate in Tortona, Piemonte from Cortese vines planted in the central hilltops of the Gavi di Gavi district. This lemony dry wine has a perfumed mineral character, with aromas of peach and flowers, lingering hints of vanilla and soft-textured dry finish.
This rich Viognier has a subtle yet complex nose with aromas of apricots and lime marmalade. These characters translate generously onto the palate and are complemented by a rich soft texture. Made in a dry style with fleshy fruit and balancing acidity.
De Wetshof specialise in site specific wines, the Limestone Hill is from a vineyard with heavy clay soils, rich in Limestone. The wine displays fresh citrus fruit, ripe nectarine and lemon zest with a little touch of candyfloss and floral aromatics on the nose.
Picked from 50 - 60 year old vines, Clos de la Vielle Chaussée is a classic Muscadet with aromas of white fruit and citrus peel, ripe green apple and bread crust. Perfect with seafood.
Vineyards around Lake Kaltern are very small in size and most of the winemakers in the region have less than one hectare of land, for a small winemaker it is virtually impossible to make and market their own wine so the co-operative of Kaltern was set up in 1906 with the goal of producing high quality wines.
Garganega. 85 %Trebbiano di Soave. 15% Brilliant straw yellow colour with greenish hints. The delicate nose is reminiscent of almond blossoms and marzipan.Good depth of fruit on the palate, nicely balanced by a zingy acidity that enhances its long length.
Tres Naris Riesling is bright yellow in colour with tiny hints of green. The wine has aromas of fresh hay and yellow fruits. The medium bodied palate is fresh and invigorating, with lively acidity to balance the full, ripe fruit on the long, juicy finish.
Light delicate Oz Savvy known for it`s soft touch and elegance. Very aromatic with notes of passion fruit, pear and nettles. Lots of fruit flavour on the palate including passion fruit and citrus lime, with lingering notes of nettles, all balanced by crisp acid. Bone dry and unoaked to maximise freshness.
A rather unique Toscana Bianco, made from Sangiovese vinified white. This produces a crisp and aromatic white, reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc. On the nose there are aromas of white fruit and garden herbs, the palate is refreshing, with ripe citrus fruits and an elegant minerality. Certainly worth a try.
An elegant single estate Chardonnay. Bang on trend with soft nectarine fruit, delicate mineral notes and no oak. This wine is fresh and lively showing a good balance between succulent fruit and firm acids.
This wine is made from selected parcels of fruit grown in Marlborough and exhibits typical gooseberry and grassy flavours. Beautifully balanced with fantastic tropical fruit flavours and a clean fresh citric finish.
Light in colour with green hues, it is fruity and elegant on the nose, with aromas of ripe fruits and a hint of lime peel. On the palate it is elegant, well-balanced with flavours of yellow and green fruit, and a long finish.
