Jean Stodden Pegel 735 Spatburgunder 2020

Jean Stodden Pegel 735 Spatburgunder

STODD735 / 75cl

On the night of July 14, 2021, a devastating flood destroyed the tranquil Ahr Valley and the Stodden winery. Incredible masses of water made their way through the winery and cellar. The water hurled wine barrels around like ping pong balls. Countless barrels became unusable within just a few hours, and the traditional chalk inscriptions were gone - an identification of the wines was therefore impossible. Under these extreme conditions they began to save what could be saved. "How high exactly the water rose that night we do not know; the calculated and unimaginable level (Pegel) was 735. Even today these water masses and the destruction caused by the flood are incomprehensible. Adjacent to our winery, some of our vineyards were destroyed. Pegel 735 - our all-rounder, a cuvee from our estate wines, originates from vineyards that no longer exist. A blend of two sites, one near the Ahr river, a cooler site, which provides the typical round cherry-red fruit, the other from the lower part of Rech, which gives the mineral structure and complexity through the slate soils. Whether we will ever be allowed to plant in these locations again has not yet been decided."
