The massive political, social and economic changes in South Africa have allowed the South African wine industry to flourish in the last twenty years. There is a focus on quality over quantity, innovation and serving a large international demand for South African wines. Chenin Blanc remains the king of whites, while South African reds have seen the greatest renaissance with the improved quality of local hero Pinotage and the increased use of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc in many red blends. The granite terroir (low acidity) is responsible for the rounder, fuller style of South African reds that has become so popular.
