Greek Wine

Wine was a very important element of ancient Greek culture, including the Greek god of wine, Dionysus! But just like the modern Greek state is barely 100 years old, the modern Greek wine industry has only been developing for the last 50 years or so. The Greek powerhouse grape varieties, Assyrtiko (white, similar to Riesling) and Agiorghitiko (soft, fruity red) are often blended with international varieties that have been grown in Greece since the sixties. Today, Greek wines are rapidly climbing in reputation, while remaining good value for everyday drinking.
